St Christopher's Junior School French teacher Olga Garland will be one of 35,000 runners when she takes part in the 42.195km Paris Marathon on April 9.

This is Ms Garland's second marathon; her debut was at the Bahrain Road Runners 27th Bahrain Full Marathon held last year.

"I have been preparing for the marathon since October, but I only got accepted at the beginning of this month," said the 32-year-old Fenchwoman, who has been in Bahrain since March 2000.

"I had to go through an agency in England to enter the race, because the normal entry route was full, so it's quite popular.

"The Paris Marathon is also celebrating its 30th anniversary, so it's a big event." Ms Garland decided to raise the money for Cancer Research UK in honour of her close friend Pilar Barahona, who died last June after a four-year battle against the disease.

"I was with Pilar the last year she had the disease.

"Personally it helps me grieve, that's the selfish part, but it also raises awareness about t...

Brighton - This cupboard is filled with healthy choices

Melody Prinzen is a trained Blood Analyst who, through live and dried blood samples, can discern a person’s health concerns.

Melody looks at the formation and consistency of the live blood, notes the number and shape of red and white blood cells, platelets, the presence of bacteria, and even parasites.“I’m looking for a wide variety of things such as hormonal problems and anemia,” said Melody.

Dried blood samples can indicate illnesses such as cancer, diabetes and liver problems but Melody does not diagnose her clients.

If she feels there are some indicators of more serious illness, she will suggest people visit their doctor, but for the more common health complaints, Melody will suggest various herbal remedies, as well as eating healthy foods, exercising and otherwise leading a healthy lifestyle. For every complaint, Melody will provide a healing recommendation such as milk thistle or white oak bark for joint stress.“I’d rather see you get better with one or two products than have to take 15 or 20, so I try to find the best remedy for all of your complaints,” said Melody.

“We’re all about preventative medicine.

We’d rather fix the problem now instead...
