... Today’s Using an ultrasound for guidance, doctors now implant about 100 radioactive “seeds”—each no bigger than a grain of rice—directly into the prostate with a needle.

It’s still no trip to Disneyland, but brachytherapy techniques are getting better and more accurate, thanks to innovations by companies such as Wakefield, Massachusetts-based Implant Sciences.

In late February, the small-cap public company built a test version of software that will give doctors greater control when embedding seeds that emit variable levels of radiation.

Implant Sciences is taking on industry veteran Varian Medical Systems for a piece of the prostate seed placement software market, which Varian estimates at about $12 million.

The experimental software aims to improve radiation placement by calculating where in the gland to place seeds, and at which radiation levels.

It also allows doctors to get a more detailed look at the radiation pattern by breaking down seed placement across the prostate into eight distinct graphical representations.
