He had been diagnosed with Wells started as a bassist for the blues band, Head, in Brisbane and moved to Sydney and hooked up with Buffalo, Billboard.com said.

Buffalo`s 'Volcanic Rock' became the first Australian heavy metal band to score a gold album.

He switched from bass to slide guitar in 1976 and formed Rose Tattoo, whose self-titled album in 1978 created a loyal following for the group in Britain, Germany and France.

Wells left the band 1983, but came back in 2000 for tours in Europe and for a 2002 album, 'Pain.' He later played with Illustrated Men, Scattered Aces and Romeo`s Dog and collaborated with his partner, Lucy De Soto.

He recorded five solo albums and ran a tattoo parlor called House of Pain.
