ACS to honor cancer survivors at dinner

The American Cancer Society’s Matagorda County will honor cancer survivors in the community at the annual Survivor Dinner at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 18 at the Bay City Civic Center. This year’s Relay For Life is in honor of Leonard Cornelius and Tyler Farrar. Tyler, kicker for the Bay City Blackcats football team was diagnosed with Rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare cancer, in October 2005, after experiencing low back pain. Leonard Cornelius started his war with cancer in 2000, but he had many small battles before that with prostate, carcinoma, leukemia and then the sarcoma. He waited six years for the news he got Jan. 24 — no more visits to MDA for an entire year. The dinner recognizes cancer survivors, thanks caregivers and promotes mentoring of newly diagnosed cancer victims.
