Sunscreen Makers Lie, Suits Charge

... Sunscreen Makers Lie, Suits Charge Consumer News Travel Sunscreen Makers Lie, Suits Charge March 31, 2006 Manufacturers of the top sunscreen brands relied upon by millions of American swimmers and sunbathers each year have lied about the effectiveness of their products in blocking sun rays and preventing skin diseases, including cancer, according to several coordinated lawsuits filed in California Superior Court in Los Angeles.

Such famous brands as Coppertone, Banana Boat and Hawaiian Tropic, marketed as protective "sunblocks," are in fact unreliable in protecting adults and children and can create a sense of false security that actually endangers users, the complaint charges.

"Sunscreen is the Snake Oil of the 21st Century and these companies that market it are Fortune 500 Snake Oil salesmen," said Samuel Rudman, a New York attorney.

"False claims such as 'sunblock' 'waterproof" and 'all-day protection' should be removed from these products immediately." "Parents, especially, have been defrauded into believing the false labeling and advertising claims...

The remainder of the team often camps out alongside the track.

All walkers are encouraged to raise at least $100 for the event.

When the sun goes down, hundreds of luminaria light the way under the stars and a moment of silence falls during the Ceremony of Hope.

Luminaria are paper bags filled with sand and candles.

The luminaria symbolize people, each with a name and a story to tell.

Cancer survivors officially kick off the Relay for Life, taking one lap, together, around the track.

They wear a special T-shirt, medallion or sash.

Some are years past treatment and others are still in treatment.

Some walk unaided, some are in wheelchairs.

For all, it is a moment they will never forget.

Survivors with questions are urged to contact the American Cancer Society at 800-ACS-2345 or visit the website at www.cancer.org.

More to carry than most

The elder Woods’s health has apparently taken a turn for the worse, and Tiger has indicated that he may forgo the Masters, which starts on Thursday, in order to remain at his father’s side in California.

For an athlete as single-minded as Woods, it is surely jarring to find golf suddenly, of necessity, thrust into the back seat.

(Woods commented afterwards that it was a fortuitous pairing and that he and Clarke spent much of the time commiserating and trying to lift each other’s spirits.)Padraig Harrington played in the shadow of a death sentence for ...
