There are more than 1 million skin cancers (melanoma and non-melanoma) diagnosed each year in the United States.

That's more than prostate, breast, lung, colon, uterus, ovaries and pancreas cancer combined.

And the number of skin cancers has been on the rise steadily for the past 30 years.The good news is that there is a lot you can do to protect yourself and your family from skin cancer.

Most skin cancers are caused by too much exposure to the sun's ultraviolet rays, but some may be come from artificial sources, such as tanning beds.

How do you protect yourself from Ultraviolet (UV) rays?

Limit direct sun exposure during midday, cover up, wear a hat, use a sunscreen with a sun protection factor of 15 or higher and use it regularly and properly, wear sunglasses that block UV rays, and avoid tanning beds and sunlamps.

If you notice changes in skin markings or new spots on your skin you should have these examined by your healthcare provider.
