Before that he had been a reporter, critic, copy editor, news editor and Washington correspondent - among other positions - at the Raleigh Times and Winston-Salem Journal, both in North Carolina, and at the St.

Petersburg Times in Florida.

The Courier-Journal won a Pulitzer Prize for its reporting on the need for stronger controls on strip-mining before Barnard left the news department in 1970 to become an associate editor in editorial.

The next year, he became opinion editor - a position he held 17 years.

He retired from the newspaper in 1990.

Under Barnard's leadership, Runyon said, The Courier-Journal's editorial policies had an impact on papers across the country.

He also made several changes that remain in place today on the newspaper's opinion pages.

In 1977, for example, the editorial board began interviewing political candidates before running endorsements in the newspaper, Runyon said, getting to know the politicians better before making a choice The Courier-Journal was the first newspaper in the country, Runyon said, to print responses from candidates whom the newspaper did not endorse, a policy put forth by Barnard.
