Prior to the establishment of the pilot project, a collaboration between health regions in Calgary, Edmonton and Red Deer, patients had to wait an average of 82 weeks to receive surgery.

The program has reduced that time to 11 weeks.

Meanwhile, federal Health Minister Tony Clement said in Ottawa there's no need to legally force provinces into sending patients to other jurisdictions if local lines for treatment get too long.

He said talks with provincial and territorial health ministers suggest they're all "rowing in the same direction" to find solutions and meet common benchmarks.

He stopped short of saying the federal wait times guarantee would be enshrined in legislation.
