Newswire/ - The Foundation for Taxpayer and Consumer Rights (FTCR) said Rhode Island Sen.

Jack Reed (D) deserves thanks from patients for defending Rhode Island patient protection laws by voting against an over-reaching bill to dismantle state oversight of health insurance that passed out of the U.S.

Senate health committee on March 15.

The Foundation for Taxpayer and Consumer Rights said Rhode Island patients could contact Reed and thank him for his votes at http://www.consumerwatchdog.org/.

The bill could be voted on by the full Senate as early as this week.

The legislation, S.

1955 (Enzi, R-Wyo.), would gut state Patient Bill of Rights laws established in 41 states and remove local state oversight to replace them with weaker or non-existent "harmonized" federal standards.

State rules at risk include Rhode Island laws requiring health insurance plans to provide cervical, prostate and breast cancer screenings and guaranteeing an independent review if an insurer denies coverage.
