George Connelly, an adviser of Dorchester-based Health Care Matters, said: "Once an expat is settled abroad he can often find a good local provider by word of mouth in the international community." He knew of many cases, in the Gulf and elsewhere, where shopping around locally paid off.

However, Mr Connelly stressed the need to read the small print and consider the "portability factor" - whether the individual would require cover to extend elsewhere, perhaps to his European home state.
