Weinberger made his mark as an appointed, not elected, official.

Weinberger held several posts in the Nixon administration, where he became known as "Cap the Knife" for his budget trimming.

President Reagan appointed him as Secretary of Defense, a position the Army infantry veteran held for seven years.

In the January/February 1997 issue, TAE editors Bill Kauffman and Tom Switzer interviewed Caspar Weinberger in his Washington office after the 1996 election.

TAE: What do you make of the election?

Have the voters rejected the Republican Party of your generation?

MR.

WEINBERGER: I thought the results were very disappointing on the presidency, but encouraging on the congressional side.

I think the party is still very alive and strong.

TAE: You presided over the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare in the ’70s.

What’s your opinion of the social programs you oversaw?

MR.
