“I remember being hugged by total strangers who just walked up to me and said ‘God bless you.’ My cancer is not that bad, but some of these people are so brave to be out there because they know how dramatic an effect it has on their life.”Sumner pointed out that the relay teams work all year to raise the money.“They have car washes, garage sales, cookie sales and whatever it takes,” said Sumner.

“The Putnam Community Medical Center gave us a check for $20,000 last year and one for $15,000 the year before.

A lot of corporate sponsorships provide funds and services throughout the year, but they are too numerous to list.”Sumner stays focused on raising money for the event, but said his effort is minimum compared to others.“I do what I do because I’m tired of going to funerals because my friends are dying,” he said.

“The funeral I went to last week was a friend who was told he was terminal.

He died 19 days later.
