Rose Tattoo`s Pete Wells dead at 60

...The founder of the power blues band Rose Tattoo had been hospitalized for about five weeks and died Monday, Billboard.com reported Tuesday.

He had been diagnosed with Wells started as a bassist for the blues band, Head, in Brisbane and moved to Sydney and hooked up with Buffalo, Billboard.com said.

Buffalo`s 'Volcanic Rock' became the first Australian heavy metal band to score a gold album.

He switched from bass to slide guitar in 1976 and formed Rose Tattoo, whose self-titled album in 1978 created a loyal following for the group in Britain, Germany and France.

Wells left the band 1983, but came back in 2000 for tours in Europe and for a 2002 album, 'Pain.' He later played with Illustrated Men, Scattered Aces and Romeo`s Dog and collaborated with his partner, Lucy De Soto.

He recorded five solo albums and ran a tattoo parlor called House of Pain.

A memorial service was scheduled for Friday in Sydney.
