The tests were developed by a team of three doctors and a scientist at the Korean Advanced Institute of Science and Technology and Yonsei University.

Thanks to a new marker known as "NeoNovo," one will be easily able to detect cancerous cells, said Dr.

Yoo Nae-chun of the College of Medicine, Yonsei University, yesterday.

DNA or protein chips embedded with NeoNovo will do the task of screening cancer-causing cells in our protein structure.

The tests are currently undergoing further clinical trials and should be ready for commercial use in two to three years.

Yoo's team includes Dr.

Keum Ki-chang and Dr.

Yoo won-min at Yonsei and bioengineering professor Lee Sang-yub from KAIST.

NeoNovo, as a variation of cytokine, is only found in cancer-stricken cells.

Functioning as a sure differentiator between normal and cancer cells, the marker is expected to increase the effectiveness of cancer diagnosis by 70 percent, the team said.

It marks the first time such a comprehensive cancer detector has been developed covering as many as 10 cancer types, including gastric, liver, breast, pancreas, kidney, prostate and colon, the team claimed.
