Norton Ernest receives American Cancer Society award

...Ernest's battle with cancer was successful.

But his story doesn't end there.

He wanted to help other men get through the ordeal.

About 11 years ago, he began working with the American Cancer Society's Chico office to set up the first prostate support group in the area.

"I remember my first meeting.

It started at 7 p.m.

One person showed up.

I thought 'Maybe this isn't going to work.'" He soon realized that afternoons would be a better time to these reach men.

Many of them were retired.

Most cases of The support group meets at 4 p.m.

on the third Thursday of the month in Room 101 at Enloe Conference Center, 1528 The Esplanade in Chico.

He said about 30 men typically come to the support group meetings.

Sometimes, as many as 50 show up.
