He also noted that the Burkey family, unlike the Long family, placed no conditions on a time frame for building the park.

William Long died in 2001, Mesa County inherited a 40-acre parcel on Patterson Road east of 31 Road.

Long’s will called for the land to be turned into a park by 2010, and the county has obliged, completing the first of four phases last fall.

But Palmer said he’s tired of the excuses.

“I’m embarrassed that we have this out there for 40 years, and if somebody doesn’t fight for it, it’s going to be another 20 years, and that’s just ridiculous,” Palmer said.

Stevens said there is something to salvage from the delay.

“From the Burkeys’ perspective, they were visionaries.

I’d say they were ahead of their time in donating the land to the city.
